Containers’ Arrival at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club Signals the Start of Training for LA 2028
US Sailing has established its initial bases in Long Beach, marking the start of the team’s official presence in California as part of their preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. This includes the arrival of two shipping containers at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, sent from the US Sailing Team’s Olympic headquarters in Marseille, France, for the Paris Olympics. Additional facilities will be revealed in the future. Details on the facilities will be shared as they become available.
Marcus Lynch, US Sailing High Performance Director, states, “The investment in these team bases illustrates the US Sailing Team’s dedication to fostering a high-performance environment while building strong local connections in Long Beach.”
The containers, which previously served as “bases” for the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics, include meeting spaces, storage, a workshop, and offices to support the Team during their training and preparation.
Once they arrived, the containers were unloaded and positioned at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, one of the US Sailing Team’s home base locations for the 2028 Olympic sailing event. ABYC has a longstanding partnership with US Sailing, including hosting a US Open series in Olympic classes each summer.
This signifies the first step in establishing a local training base for LA 2028, allowing athletes to acclimate to local conditions in Long Beach, which is a vital part of their preparation.
US Sailing staff, including Marcus Lynch, High Performance Director; Rosie Chapman, Olympic Development Director; and Blaine Pedlow, Senior Vice President of Development, were present to oversee the containers’ placement and organization alongside Alamitos Bay Yacht Club personnel.
“This is an exciting next step for Olympic Development Program athletes, not just for Los Angeles 2028 but also for Brisbane 2032,” Chapman noted, mentioning her recent relocation to the area to manage operations and guide our development athletes in their training. “I’m thrilled to have this home for all US athletes and the impact it will have on developing our Olympic team. Long Beach is a world-class venue, and now it is coming together with world-class resources.”
In the next four years, the world’s top-performance sailors will shift their attention to Long Beach in preparation for the LA 2028 Games. US Sailing is committed to collaborating with World Sailing and LA28 to create an outstanding Olympic experience and remains dedicated as a key stakeholder to facilitate that for our athletes and their international counterparts.
By setting up a physical presence years ahead of time, the team is investing not only in refining athlete performance but also in strengthening ties with the local community, ensuring that every aspect of their preparation—from gear to surroundings—is optimized for Olympic competition.
“This delivery marks a significant milestone in the US Sailing Team’s long-term success plan for the 2028 Olympics,” said Pedlow. “It highlights the team’s commitment to creating a solid training infrastructure and customizing their preparation to the unique Long Beach conditions. I’m enthusiastic about US Sailing expanding its presence on the West Coast and engaging with the local sailing community to build a world-class team.”
