A growing number of yacht owners, designers, and builders now believe that two hulls are superior to one, as evidenced by the notable rise in popularity of multihulls over recent years. The three key advantages of a large power catamaran are considered to be stability, safety, and spaciousness—particularly important for extended sea voyages. Catamarans not only feature a broader beam but also tend to minimize motion during rough seas. Additionally, speed and fuel efficiency are crucial factors, with many fuel-efficient catamarans outpacing monohulls of equivalent length. Furthermore, naval architects often highlight that catamaran designs decrease water resistance and enhance aerodynamics. Many owners also appreciate the ample space afforded by the two-hulled structure, both inside and outside.

As the demand for multihulls grows, their design has advanced considerably. Few yachts attract attention like Tecnomar’s asymmetric 2023 creation, This Is It, which is among the most striking yachts launched in the past year. Silent Yachts has recently revealed that they will collaborate with Venice-based studio Nuvolari Lenard to design a new generation of solar-powered catamarans.

Presently, nearly every catamaran manufacturer seems to aspire to those ambitions. Consequently, the multihull sector is transitioning from its previously square and functional designs towards sleeker, more opulent yachts.

Here are six of the most remarkable catamarans that were launched, underwent refurbishments, or were unveiled in 2024.

Incat Crowther ‘Hodor’

Recently refitted in 2024 and available for charter through Edmiston, Hodor showcases the versatility of catamaran design. This floating toy box is the world’s first catamaran specifically designed as a support vessel. Crafted by Incat Crowther, it mainly supports the 285-foot Feadship Lonian. The two vessels work in unison, with the 217-foot shadow cat transporting a fleet of five bespoke tenders, which includes a 55-foot chase boat and a 388 Skater powerboat capable of 165 knots. It also accommodates nine Jet Skis, two Yamaha ATVs, and four Yamaha TW200 trail motorcycles, along with a three-person submersible, crew, staff, and supplies. With an astounding 1,582 gross tons of internal space and a helipad on the aft deck, Hodor is an essential travel companion.

Rossinavi ‘Seawolf X’

Robb Report was the first to conduct an exclusive tour of Rossinavi’s Seawolf X before its unveiling at the Monaco show this year. This 140-foot aluminum catamaran marks the Italian yard’s inaugural entry into multihulls. It’s a hybrid-electric yacht featuring advanced AI software (developed in collaboration with Videoworks) that optimizes performance and enhances the experiences of owners and guests. The system not only lowers the yacht’s energy consumption but also aids in navigation. Leisure amenities include a glass-encased Jacuzzi on the sunken foredeck, a pool, and a sauna in the beach club at sea level, adding a touch of superyacht luxury.

Rossinavi ‘Solsea’

Rossinavi’s second stunning hybrid-electric catamaran in 2024 merges art and technology into a fully realizable design concept. The 141-foot multihull Solsea results from a three-year teamwork involving Rossinavi, designer Yves Béhar, and Videoworks. It follows the launch of Seawolf X last summer. Notably, Solsea is not just a vision; it boasts original features like stylized arches on the flybridge, a cutting-edge bow pool with interconnected mechanical supports, and an exclusive external balcony that spans the two hulls and connects to the bow. Inside, the use of natural matte wood and bouclé textiles reflects the practical design ethos for which Yves Béhar is renowned.

Xcel Yacht ‘XCEL 70’

The 77 foot overall catamaran ,built in the UAE by Riviera boat yard has been hailed as the best value-for-money catamaran of the year, a testament to the expertise and vision of Xcel Yachts. Renowned for their commitment to quality and innovation, the builder has redefined the balance between luxury and affordability. With meticulous craftsmanship, advanced technology, and an eye for detail, the Xcel 70 delivers exceptional performance and comfort, making it an irresistible choice for those seeking an elevated yachting experience.

Sunreef 43M Eco

Notable figures like Fernando Alonso, Rafael Nadal, and Nico Rosberg are among the prominent owners of Sunreef yachts. However, the standout feature of this Polish builder is not an individual but its commitment to sustainability. The first 140-foot Sunreef 43M Eco sailing catamaran showcases a custom-engineered foam core designed to reduce weight and optimize fuel efficiency. The hull is equipped with 1,292 square feet of integrated custom solar panels to meet its energy needs. This yacht holds the title of the world’s largest eco-friendly electric catamaran.

WiderCat 76

It’s been two years since Wider revealed its initial 92-foot catamaran model. This year saw the launch of a smaller sibling; however, it retains equally striking aesthetics designed by Luca Dini Design & Architecture collaborating with Wider’s Centro Stile. The exterior design maximizes usable space, while the interior showcases a refreshed “Hamptons” aesthetic with ivory-lacquered panels, dark oak ceilings, and herringbone parquet flooring. The layout features four cabins and expansive social areas, maintaining the family-friendly ambiance of the larger WiderCat 92, which was showcased last summer in Venice and Cannes, alongside the Wider 60. “The WiderCat 76 combines the allure of a superyacht with the maneuverability of a smaller vessel—a blend of contemporary design, advanced technology, and expert craftsmanship,” remarks Marcello Maggi, president of W-Fin Sarl, Wider’s parent company.
