TAG Heuer Carrera Chrono

Just when it seemed TAG Heuer couldn’t entice you with another chronograph, the brand introduces what may be the finest alternative to the classic Carrera “Glassbox” model: the Carrera Extreme Sport. While newer fans may associate certain Monaco models with the Extreme Sport, more experienced collectors will remember this beloved “open dial” style from 2016. Though this specific aesthetic has never truly left the TAG Heuer lineup, it has been subtly present in the Carrera collection. That changes now, as the new Carrera Extreme Sport confirms what TAG Heuer enthusiasts have recognized since this original style’s debut: it’s a classic.

While the “Glassbox” design will certainly attract collectors longing for the essence of 1960s Formula 1, the Extreme Sport seems poised to race into the future. This was the original pitch in 2016, and it returns with six new timepieces that feature an even bolder appearance. There are four standard chronographs, all utilizing the automatic TH20-00 caliber, along with two chronograph tourbillons (still driven by the formidable caliber TH20-09). Initially, the predecessor models were powered by Heuer 02 movements. With more evolutionary advancements than just simple updates, these new models take the place of all previous Extreme Sport iterations.

The aesthetic appeal of the Extreme Sport has consistently captivated TAG Heuer fans – the years when it dominated the Carrera collection coincided with the period when the brand reportedly sold the highest number of watches in the last decade, based on Morgan Stanley’s findings. Given that the movements are all contemporary and appear unchanged, we won’t dwell on them. Instead, the radical transparency deserves closer examination, especially since the movement isn’t as visible as one might hope. This look truly stands out, especially for those wanting to attract attention, beyond the aficionados who can appreciate the date display. This does not apply to the chronograph tourbillon TH20-09, which lacks a date feature.

Collectors who believe that ‘more’ equals better will be pleased to notice that all watches feature striking combinations of materials. This includes Grade 2 titanium, rose gold, ceramic, forged carbon, and rubber; the bezels on the chronograph tourbillon models are made from forged carbon, while standard models use ceramic. Each watch measures 44mm and is water-resistant up to 100 meters. This playful mix of materials has long been part of the TAG Heuer narrative, similar to its LVMH counterparts, Hublot and Zenith.

We have yet to view the watches in person, so we reserve judgment on how all elements harmonize. Additionally, the legibility aspect, which TAG Heuer has emphasized in recent models of the Carrera chronograph, is essential. This will also require inspecting the actual watches, as we haven’t even covered the various colors used on the dials. This is particularly evident in the date ring but also extends to the chronograph subdials. To conclude, the Extreme Sport undeniably focuses on ‘more,’ inviting more thorough examination.
