Captain Steven: The equipment varies depending on where we’re fishing for sharks. In shallow waters, we sight fish and utilize spinning or fly-fishing rods. In deeper waters where larger sharks reside, we employ substantial conventional reels and sturdy rods … 30–80 series and sometimes up to 130. We manage all the permits.
CCL: What species of shark are likely found in the waters of Key West? Which is the most sought after?
Captain Steven: The most requested species are the hammerhead and tiger sharks, followed closely by the bull shark. The species we target include: bulls, hammerheads, blacktips, reef sharks, tigers, lemons, nurse sharks, and bonnetheads.
CCL: Are your clients permitted to keep any of their catches? Do you bring the shark onboard before its release?
Captain Steven: We consistently follow a catch-and-release policy while shark fishing.
CCL: Is catching a shark considered more challenging than big-game fishing?
Captain Steven: No. From the perspective of a fishing guide, it’s quite straightforward. Clients may find it challenging, but it provides an excellent opportunity to land a substantial fish.

Captain Steven: Absolutely. We supply data to groups committed to preservation through sound scientific practices.
