The second to last day of the IOM World Championships felt for the leaders like a card dealer reshuffling a deck. There were significant fluctuations on the leaderboard, with several top sailors achieving impressive consecutive results alongside some outstanding scores.
Once again, conditions were ideal in Gladstone, with a 10-knot breeze featuring occasional shifty gusts. The favorable weather enabled the race officials to conduct 5 races, totaling 25 flights. The fierce competition and tight racing contributed significantly to the scorecard volatility experienced today.
The standout performer was Romain Dubreuil, closely trailed by Zvonko Jelacic and Paul Jones. After 17 races, Zvonko remains the sole competitor with results strictly from A fleet. Sadly for Alexis Carre from France, currently in third place, a poor finish today has relegated him to C fleet for the final day’s races. Alexis exhibited remarkable consistency throughout the regatta, contending for second place overall until his last two races of the day.
As we approach the last day, Zvonko leads with 44 points, Ian Vickers follows in second with 50 points, and Alexis stands third with 69 points. We won’t have another race drop on the scorecard until the completion of 24 races, and since we won’t reach that number, every mistake will be costly today.
The forecast for our concluding day predicts an East North East breeze of 10-15 knots.
