The 2024 iQFOiL Asian Championships and the iQFOiL Youth & Junior Asian Championships, along with the iQFOiL International Games, are set to begin in the Yantian District, Shenzhen, China.
Presented by the Chinese Yachting Association and iQFOiL Class, this prestigious event will bring together 148 athletes from various Asian countries such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Korea to enjoy a week of exciting windsurfing competitions.
The championship period runs from November 19 through 25, where champions will be determined across numerous categories: U23, U19, U17, U15, and Senior divisions for both Men and Women. The inaugural race day is tomorrow, November 20, with the official opening ceremony at 9:30, followed by the first race at 12:30.
“I am thrilled to be here after a break of nine months; I took some time off school and can’t wait to start competing,” expressed Elkan Oh (SGP 52). “The wind today was weak, it was cloudy, and there were large waves, but a typhoon is on the horizon, so perhaps we can sail with stronger winds—fingers crossed!”
The competition structure includes an Opening Series that may consist of any or all the following events: Course Racing, Sprint Slalom, and Marathon. Subject to wind conditions and forecasts, the objective is to conduct races in all three disciplines, providing competitors a thorough examination of their abilities. The Opening Series will be separated into a Qualifying Series and a Final Series.
The top 10 boards from the Opening Series will qualify for the Medal Series, where they will vie for championship honors. This design guarantees that only the elite competitors advance to the final rounds, increasing the stakes with Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, and the Final stages, using a knockout format for progression.
The iQFOiL Class, designated as the official windsurfing gear for the 2024 Olympics, is progressively gaining recognition worldwide. This event is anticipated to significantly bolster iQFOiL’s influence in Asia and aid in the growth of advanced windsurfing within the region.
With 148 participants and a busy schedule, this week promises exhilarating races and a remarkable exhibition of talents. To stay updated on all the excitement, follow our coverage of the 2024 iQFOiL Asian Championships in Shenzhen, China.
