October 15 & 19-20, 2024
Hudson River Community Sailing (HRCS), a prominent nonprofit organization focused on youth development and community sailing, will host its 15th annual Sailing for Scholars Gala and Regatta in New York City on October 15 and 19-20.
The gala is scheduled for the Model Room at the New York Yacht Club on October 15, honoring Noreen Doyle, President & CEO of the Hudson River Park Trust. Doyle has advocated for direct access to the Hudson River, collaborating with local communities and organizations to expand programming on the water and support environmental research. The two-day regatta will begin on October 19 at Dyckman Marina in Inwood, where sailing teams will compete on the water while also raising funds.
All funds raised from Sailing for Scholars will directly benefit HRCS’s innovative youth development and maritime access initiatives, including Sail Academy, a multi-year program that teaches math, science, and leadership to middle and high school students through sailing and boat-building, and Adaptive Sailing, a program HRCS initiated in 2021 to provide waterfront access, sailing education, and community engagement for New Yorkers with physical and developmental disabilities.
Sail Academy engages students in land and water concepts through small-group, hands-on learning. The program includes internships allowing students to learn all aspects of operating a commercial sailing school, in addition to essential college access initiatives and networking opportunities. In the Adaptive Sailing program, HRCS collaborates with specialists in sailing, adaptive design, and outdoor recreation to offer tailored equipment and expert instruction to participants.
“We are excited to mark 15 years of the Sailing for Scholars Gala and Regatta, which symbolizes our commitment to empowering youth through sailing and education,” said HRCS Executive Director Robert Burke. “This year, we celebrate Noreen Doyle for her relentless advocacy for accessible waterfront programming, which aligns seamlessly with our mission. Every dollar raised will directly support our programs, ensuring that all New Yorkers have opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive on the water.”
