The AC75s have revolutionized the sport not just for sailors but also for sailing photographers. With boats reaching speeds in the range of 40 knots and exceeding 50 knots, photographers and photo boat drivers must make split-second choices to capture their desired images.

They are required to react instantly to photograph the AC75s in motion. It’s akin to shooting Formula 1 racing on water. This aspect has drawn the attention of Formula 1 photographers, who are applying their expertise in this new environment at this year’s America’s Cup.

Additionally, the event also attracts conflict photographers, who understand that to freeze a speeding bullet, you need to shoot at 1/2000 of a second. Their proficiency translates well to the aquatic arena. Most photographers do not shoot single frames when capturing the AC75s; if they attempt to do so, the vessel has often sped past before they can finalize their setup. Instead, they utilize continuous burst shooting with “servo” focusing to maintain clarity as the boats zoom by.
