After several engaging seasons in Europe, the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) is collaborating with the World Ice and Snow Sailing Association (WISSA) to host the Ice and Snow Sailing World Championships on the American continent for the first time.
Scheduled to be held in Madison, Wisconsin, the event will include course racing, marathon challenges, and kite freestyle/big air competitions. Additionally, WISSA will offer course racing for sleds and wings alongside short track slalom events.
The world’s leading wind-powered racers will convene at Lake Mendota to vie for the titles of the 2025 World Champions. This event is expected to be a highlight of the 2025 Frozen Assets festival, a well-loved local celebration that showcases the beauty and recreational activities available on Madison’s lakes during the winter season.
Utilizing the same kites as those used in KiteFoil Racing, competitors on skis or snowboards will capture the wind to achieve speeds of up to 50 knots on the snow-covered surface of Lake Mendota.
Onlookers can watch the exciting performances from the viewing deck at the Edgewater Hotel.
“This occasion symbolizes a return for us Americans and is a tremendous privilege to welcome many friendly international rivals,” stated Steve Cohan from Madison.
Madison’s unique setting on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona provides a mix of urban sophistication and natural beauty.
Home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the city exudes a lively, youthful spirit. Madison’s Capitol building, completed in 1917, is an impressive architectural achievement constructed from 43 different types of stone sourced from six countries and eight states.
The event is officially recognized by both WISSA and IKA.
