NYYC American Magic’s campaign for the America’s Cup concluded, highlighting their unwavering determination and spirit. After years of intensive preparation and countless hours spent at sea, the team faced numerous challenges with passion and commitment. Their desire to win was clear from the first race through to the last moments of intense competition.
Today, NYYC American Magic concluded their final race in the Louis Vuitton Cup Semi-Finals, succumbing to the Italian team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, 3-5, in the first-to-five points series.
Under overcast skies and calm waters, the race commenced with NYYC American Magic’s Patriot entering the start box promptly from the left, crossing ahead of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. Following a straight run toward the right boundary, both yachts turned back to the line, engaging in a strategic contest for positioning. The Americans crossed first, prompting the Italians to tack away; however, Luna Rossa regained speed with a shift to leeward as American Magic executed a tack.
At the initial windward gate, Luna Rossa was ahead by 20 seconds, yet Patriot narrowed the gap to just eight seconds due to a timely windshift. Despite increasing pressure, a brief touch downwind allowed Luna Rossa to expand their lead to 21 seconds at the second leeward gate. In the final leg, opportunities for recovery did not arise, and Luna Rossa crossed the finish line 61 seconds in the lead, concluding American Magic’s semi-final run.
After the race, Terry Hutchinson, President of Sailing Operations for American Magic, spoke about the team’s effort, expressing both pride and sadness. “We were always a team that would improve with more racing. We encountered setbacks, like Goody going down, but I am incredibly impressed with how well Lucas stepped into the role. Additionally, I’m proud of our team’s development. It was remarkable to see how fast Tommy and Lucas built their rapport, standing toe-to-toe with past winners of the Prada Cup and the last America’s Cup challenger. We were close, knocking on the door virtually every race. So the disappointment stems from seeing the potential and the direction we were heading.”
Hutchinson continued, emphasizing the team’s strong morale and the emotional weight of the competition. “Over nearly six years, we’ve built a tremendous team spirit, beginning with Hap and Doug, filtered down through all team members. We are very lucky to have that kind of backing. Our refusal to give up and our relentless pursuit of improvement each day—that team spirit is hard to replicate. The toughest part of all this is returning to shore and facing our families and all those who support us while living the America’s Cup experience, even when not sailing with us. That is where the true disappointment lies.”
While the outcome was not what the team had aimed for, the campaign will be remembered for the remarkable resilience and passion NYYC American Magic displayed in every race. Their steadfast determination, relentless effort in every maneuver, and indomitable spirit have made a lasting impression on American Magic’s journey.
