Disney Treasure has not yet begun its service, but this Disney cruise ship is already playing a role in saving lives.

While on its way to its first homeport, Port Canaveral (Orlando), Florida, the Triton-class vessel rescued four people from a sinking catamaran on the afternoon of November 10, 2024.

The 50-foot catamaran, named Serenity, started taking on water about 230 miles off the coast of Bermuda due to a gasket failure in its escape hatch.

The passengers contacted the U.S. Coast Guard for emergency help, which prompted the USCG to reach out to nearby ships for assistance.

Disney Treasure was one of the closest vessels, located only 80 miles (around 70 nautical miles) away.

The crew, which had already joined the ship with a gross tonnage of 144,256, acted swiftly by deploying an onboard lifeboat to the sinking craft. Thankfully, all four individuals were rescued without any reported injuries.

“We are glad that Disney Treasure was able to assist the stranded boat passengers,” Captain Marco Nogara told ABC News.

“Our crew members collaborated effectively during the rescue, showcasing their training and dedication to safety,” Captain Nogara added.

The identities of the rescued individuals have been kept private to ensure their confidentiality.

It remains uncertain where Disney’s latest addition will take the rescued individuals, but typically, cruise ships either transfer them to local authorities, such as the U.S. Coast Guard, or allow them to stay onboard until a suitable place for disembarkation is reached.

Of course, the immediate priority is to provide any medical assistance needed and to offer food and water to the individuals.

Disney Treasure Sets Sail for Its Maiden Voyage

According to cruise tracking data, the 4,000-passenger vessel is back on its route, set to reach Port Canaveral on November 12, 2024.

The Disney ship is nearing Florida, cruising in the North West Atlantic Ocean at a speed of 17 knots per hour.

This journey will culminate a two-week Transatlantic voyage that started in Eemshaven, Netherlands, on October 29, 2024.

Once the ship arrives, preparations will begin for its maiden voyage, scheduled to set sail on December 21, 2024.

This inaugural 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise will visit Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Castaway Cay, Disney’s original private island destination in the Bahamas.

Following its maiden season, the ship will alternate between Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries throughout the winter.

After its debut at Port Canaveral, the following month will be focused on preparing for the first guests.

For instance, crew members who haven’t yet boarded the ship will travel to the Orlando-based port. By the time it enters service, approximately 1,555 crew members will be onboard to create a magical experience for guests.

Additionally, the creative team will continue testing and fine-tuning all details to ensure perfection for the maiden voyage.

Even during its Transatlantic crossing, teams on board were testing new Disney songs to play on the ship’s horn.

As an exciting lead-up to the launch, a special float called “Magic Meets the Seas” will honor Disney Treasure during the 98th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
