The 50Steel retains the sleek, sophisticated lines that are the hallmark of Sanlorenzo yachts.
I was keen to explore the Sanlorenzo 50Steel after a broker called me, sharing his excitement over its distinctive layout and design just before the Monaco Yacht Show began.
Despite the dreadful weather on the day of my visit – constant rain and overcast skies – a line of enthusiastic visitors formed to board this much-anticipated vessel. My curiosity was heightened as I prepared to discover the reason behind all the excitement.
Unveiled in May 2024 at Sanlorenzo’s La Spezia shipyard, the 49.9m superyacht signifies a major advance in environmentally friendly marine technology. This yacht becomes the first superyacht equipped with the modular Reformer-Fuel Cell system, which can convert green methanol into hydrogen and subsequently into electricity, fulfilling the yacht’s hotel energy requirements.
This groundbreaking system, developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy, enables the yacht to function almost entirely without emissions, generating up to 100kW of power. While integrating this green technology in the bow does lessen the size of the master suite, it effectively equips the yacht to adhere to 2030 environmental regulations and covers about 90% of its typical energy needs while moored.
Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo, stated: “Throughout my career, I believe I have significantly contributed to innovation in yachting. When it dawned on me that we could be the pioneers in creating a yacht capable of generating electricity without emitting carbon, I felt we had truly accomplished something unique, guiding us toward the future.
“I proudly proclaim that the 50Steel is the world’s first superyacht featuring the Reformer-Fuel Cell system, marking a critical achievement for Sanlorenzo, innovation, and sustainability.”
The 50Steel introduces the innovative Hidden Engine Room (HER) system, which fundamentally alters space utilization aboard a superyacht. By relocating the propulsion systems to a horizontal position on the lower deck, the HER system frees up significant space for leisure activities while keeping the yacht’s gross tonnage below 500GT.
This advancement allows for the creation of the spacious Ocean Lounge, directly linking the aft beach club – complete with an exquisite pool and folding side-sea terraces – to the yacht’s four guest cabins, gym, and spa, all on the same level.
The guest cabins are elegantly designed, with all except the master suite located on the lower deck, providing direct access to the Ocean Lounge, ensuring easy connectivity to the main areas for lounging, leisure, and wellness.
The yacht’s architecture features four staggered levels that generate ample volumes with minimal divisions or barriers. The transition between different areas is fluid, from the gym and spa on the lower deck to the second saloon on the upper deck, with net ceiling heights ranging from 2.1m to an impressive 3.35m.
These staggered levels are connected via a series of staircases filled with natural light, facilitating an uninterrupted exploration of all zones. This design results in a spacious yet harmonious ambiance throughout the yacht, excelling in both space optimization and luxury.
The Sanlorenzo 50Steel offers a remarkable onboard environment, focusing on luxury and comfort. One highlight is the 120sqm beach club, featuring three open terraces and two pools – one at the stern and another on the sun deck.
The main deck serves as the yacht’s core, showcasing an elegant saloon intended for relaxation and entertainment. Centrally located, the dining area provides ample space for memorable gatherings with family and friends.
Interestingly, the master suite is nestled on the main deck, a private haven of elegance and tranquility. It includes a private office, two dressing rooms, and a spacious ensuite, striking the perfect balance between seclusion and comfort.
The suite’s design fuses dark walnut walls, Japanese-style screens, and custom wallpaper, creating a serene and private retreat that radiates a warm, minimalist, and sophisticated atmosphere.
Envisioned by Piero Lissoni, the yacht’s interior combines timeless and contemporary design elements, emanating a sophisticated yet understated loft-style elegance. The dark wood paneling, coffered ceilings, and Lissoni’s signature clean lines infuse the 50Steel with luxury, modernity, and a welcoming warmth.
Lissoni leveraged advanced 3D design technology during this project, ensuring meticulous control over every detail and achieving a flawless realization of his aesthetic vision.
The 50Steel signifies a pivotal moment in superyacht design, particularly in its focus on sustainability. The Reformer-Fuel Cell system allows the yacht to remain anchored for extended periods without diesel generation, significantly cutting emissions. This groundbreaking technology positions the 50Steel as a pioneering ship in the realm of luxury yacht carbon-neutral cruising.
Moreover, Sanlorenzo’s commitment to responsible development extends beyond technological progress.
The shipyard actively participates in marine conservation initiatives through the Fondazione Sanlorenzo, equipping tools and opportunities to protect and improve the socio-cultural, economic, and environmental heritage of Italy’s smaller islands and advancing cultural enrichment through Sanlorenzo Arts, based in Venice.
Envisioned by Zuccon International Project, the 50Steel’s exterior maintains the clean, sophisticated lines typical of Sanlorenzo yachts, seamlessly combining intricate interior architecture with an elegant, balanced form.
As Bernardo Zuccon stated, “The true challenge lay in interpreting a boat with such complex designs while preserving balance and simplicity. Our objective was to cultivate harmony and equilibrium, even for an onlooker.”
The connection between internal and external areas is achieved effortlessly via the yacht’s open plan and thoughtful design elements, fostering a fluid relationship between indoor and outdoor living spaces. Sanlorenzo’s design ethos prioritizes maximum usability and seamless transitions, ensuring every inch of the yacht is tailored for comfort and functionality.
The 50Steel doesn’t just shine in luxury and environmental consciousness; it excels in performance as well. Powered by two MAN D2862-LE489 engines producing 1066kW each, the yacht reaches a cruising speed of 12.5 knots and a top speed of 16 knots with an impressive range of 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots, making it perfect for long-distance voyages.
With the 50Steel, Sanlorenzo is pushing the boundaries of yacht design and technology, embodying a pioneering spirit that will undoubtedly inspire the entire industry. The 50Steel exemplifies the arrival of the future of yachting, where luxury design is redefined and sustainability remains at its essence.
