Today brought immense excitement for Luna Rossa supporters who celebrated a hard-fought victory in the second match following setbacks from a breakage in the earlier race. Once again, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli demonstrated the strength and determination of their team, remaining united against the odds and emerging more resolute than ever.
On the fifth day of the Louis Vuitton Cup Finals, the AC75 foiling monohulls raced in incredible conditions, achieving speeds exceeding 50 knots in the SW winds of 18 knots that gusted to 20 knots amid choppy seas.
MATCH #07 – GBR vs ITA
Luna Rossa launched strongly, controlling Ineos Britannia and leading in the initial leg. After rounding the first mark just one second behind the British boat, Luna Rossa nosedived during the first segment of the leeward leg, damaging an aerodynamic fairing and the wind sensor. Unable to continue, Luna Rossa had to retire from the race.
Winner: GBR (+ 1 point)
MATCH #08 – ITA vs GBR
With the wind now at 20 knots, Luna Rossa aimed to level the score. Thanks to the outstanding work of the shore team, who repaired the damage swiftly, the crew led by Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni took an immediate lead. Ineos Britannia incurred a penalty for crossing the boundary, and from that point onward, Luna Rossa maintained the lead at every mark, gradually extending their advantage. Despite the British team’s efforts to narrow the lead and pressure the Italian crew with frequent maneuvers, Luna Rossa made no errors and kept Ineos Britannia at bay until the Italians crossed the finish line with a 16-second margin.
Winner: ITA (+ 1 point)
Today, Luna Rossa’s crew included Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni at the helm, with Umberto Molineris and Andrea Tesei trimming. Enrico Voltolini and Bruno Rosetti served as the cyclors in both races, while Cesare Gabbia and Emanuele Liuzzi alternated with Paolo Simion and Luca Kirwan.
