Garmin, a leading global provider of GPS technology and marine electronics, has purchased JL Audio, a firm known for its high-quality audio products tailored for boats.
The acquisition was finalized in late September, though financial specifics were not disclosed.
“We are excited to welcome JL Audio into the Garmin family. JL Audio has built a strong reputation for delivering premium audio quality, and we can’t wait to incorporate these esteemed features into the Garmin ecosystem,” stated Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and CEO, in a press release. “Together, we aim to provide an exceptional audio experience for both new and existing customers worldwide.”
JL Audio produces speakers, amplifiers, and other components for the marine and RV sectors. Founded in 1975 by James Birch and Luco Proni, the company has established itself in the industry.
A key advantage of the acquisition is the potential for seamless integration between Garmin’s navigation and communication systems and JL Audio’s high-performance audio equipment for marine use. Boaters can look forward to a more intuitive user experience, where navigation and audio systems operate in unison.
JL Audio will maintain operations at its existing headquarters in Miramar, Florida, and at its facilities in Portland, Oregon, and Phoenix, Arizona. The company employs over 600 people who will join the global Garmin team. The JL Audio brand will be preserved, and its products will be incorporated into Garmin’s marine division.
“JL Audio shares Garmin’s commitment to providing innovative technology solutions, backed by substantial R&D and engineering. We are excited about the chance to integrate within Garmin’s product ecosystem,” commented Proni, JL Audio’s founder, in a press release. “JL Audio will bring audio expertise and engineering skills to develop outstanding audio products for many years ahead.”
