Blackfin

By Walt Jennings

Blackfin. This legendary name evokes images of a deep vee, hard-core offshore fishing vessel that has seen both prosperous and challenging times since its inception in 1973. The company’s offshore hulls set the standard for small offshore fishing boats, remaining cult favorites that are frequently restored, repowered, and rigorously used today by dedicated offshore fishermen.

Thanks to the substantial advancements in outboard motor horsepower in recent years, the Blackfin legacy thrives with center console and cuddy cabin outboard models ranging from 22 to 32 feet. Although the 22 Blackfin center console is the smallest model in their new lineup, it effectively serves as both a compact fishing vessel and a family cruiser. The 222CC comes equipped with a T-top, a custom leaning post featuring flip-up bolster seating and built-in console footrests, as well as a tilting steering wheel with hydraulic steering that simplifies navigation for even novice drivers.

At the helm, you will discover an AM/FM Fusion stereo system with 4 JL Audio speakers, and the console’s front door is large enough to access a porta potti (optional). A 45-quart Yeti cooler is conveniently located under the leaning post, and ample storage compartments can be found in the bow beneath the padded seating area. Mercury outboard options range from 200 to 300 hp.

No wood is utilized in the construction of any Blackfin vessels, and the transom is fitted with a tuna door for bringing in large catches, accompanied by a recessed boarding ladder at the rear for easy re-entry after swimming or during beach stops. A highly sophisticated 30-gallon transom livewell is among the best I’ve encountered on any 22-foot boat. Additionally, the boat comes with a saltwater washdown hose for cleaning fish remnants, a stainless steel gunnel grab rail extending from the center console forward, 4 gunnel rod holders, 3 transom rod holders, and extra rod storage under each gunnel, with numerous standard features continuing on the Blackfin 222 center console.
