Believe it or not, Biscayne Bay covers far more miles of Atlantic coast than just the vibrant heart of the Miami metropolis situated between South Beach and the bustling downtown area, where the superyacht and in-water segments of the Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show (DBMIBS) take place.
From Aventura in North Miami Beach to the Upper Florida Keys, this subtropical estuary features deep-water escapes, mangrove trails, and palm-fringed islands, perfect for exploration. Given that every bit of prime and expensive real estate has been fully developed, mingling with Mother Nature’s green environment, there are numerous dining hotspots along Biscayne Bay and private properties boasting impeccably manicured mansions fit for the cover of Architectural Digest.
With so much to see, whether your aquatic plans involve making impressive waves on your triple Mercury Racing 450R outboard-powered Pirelli RIB or relaxing on the Pardo mothership, for a fantastic day of boating in the Magic City, we recommend visiting: an unforgettable sandbar, an uninhabited island, and an incredible seaside restaurant to enjoy some flavors after dark.
Biscayne Bay: the Haulover Sandbar
Located in the middle of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICA) in North Miami, the Haulover Sandbar is our first slice of tropical marine paradise. The sparkling, crystal-clear waters of this natural gem range from two to three feet deep at low tide and rise to about five feet during high tide.
Larger yachts will anchor along the perimeter in the deeper areas, but the captain will want to bring the RIB over to the shallow center so everyone can wiggle their toes in the sand and make new friends with the welcoming group of boaters enjoying themselves. Boaters often bring BBQ grills to Haulover, turning the sandbar into a floating picnic spot. Be mindful of currents, as swimming long distances here is not advised.
Additionally, don’t be surprised to see kayakers on two different missions among the crowd. The first group is paddling in from their nearby Oleta River State Park habitat and vegetation trails, while the second group is more business-minded, seen delivering hot snacks and cold six-packs of Budweiser to the boats.
The occasional graceful dolphin gliding by and friendly dogs jumping up, hoping to catch their owner’s Frisbees, add to the wonderful visuals. Loud Latin playlists featuring Pit Bull, Ricky Martin, and old-school Gloria Estefan are the norm on weekends. For sailors seeking a more peaceful experience, weekday visits offer a much quieter ambiance. The music is softer, along with the spirited, “This is Miami and anything goes” vibe.
Biscayne Bay: Flagler Memorial Island
Next, head south to Flagler Memorial Island, where history and culture converge. Built in 1920, this iconic 110-foot obelisk honors Henry Flagler, a pioneer of Florida’s development. Built in 1920, the 110-foot (34-meter) obelisk in the center of the island is a memorial to Henry Flagler, the American industrialist who played a pivotal role in developing Florida’s Atlantic coast and railway system, and for putting the cities of Miami and Palm Beach on the map.
Without seawall protection, strong tidal flows from Government Cut and numerous storms over the years have taken a toll on this iconic landmark and the island itself, but picnic tables are available, making the secluded islet worth a visit. Surrounded by stunning views of Star Island, Palm Island, Hibiscus Island, and the Venetian Isles, the northwest side is favored for beaching.
Deck at Island Gardens
Wrap up your day at the Deck at Island Gardens in the Yacht Haven Grande Marina on Watson Island. This waterfront venue offers elegant dining, cocktails, and live entertainment. This superyacht haven is the quintessential spot to wine, dine, and dance the night away.
