Bees are a crucial species due to their essential role in pollination. The harmful effects of their potential disappearance from this process are well understood.
Now let’s shift focus to rhinos, who often do not receive the attention they deserve. As another keystone species, they are fundamental to the framework of our ecosystem. Their existence fosters biodiversity, enhances ecosystem health, and sustains equilibrium. For instance, when a rhino rolls in mud, it forms a natural watering hole for other wildlife. Their grazing on vast amounts of grass prevents excessive growth and creates feeding opportunities for smaller creatures. This action also lessens wildfire risks, as unchecked dry grass can act as fuel. It’s clear—allowing this species to go extinct would lead to dire consequences.
(BRIAN LILLY)This is where SORAI comes into play. Short for Save Our Rhinos Africa and India, SORAI is a rhino conservation organization launched by former international cricketer and Hublot ambassador Kevin Pietersen. As a “socially conscious enterprise,” they strive to unite individuals and businesses for a more sustainable conservation approach. Since 2018, they have aided grassroots organizations focused on rescuing abandoned, injured, and orphaned endangered animals and rehabilitating them when possible.
Hublot acknowledges the significance of rhino conservation and is joining the effort. They are collaborating with SORAI once more to introduce the Spirit of Big Bang SORAI, a limited edition of 30 pieces featuring the renowned tonneau-shaped hand-wound tourbillon. This marks the fourth joint watch produced by both groups, and a portion of the proceeds from its sales will be donated to the organization as it endeavors to safeguard rhinos.
Spirit of Big Bang SORAI GreyWe spoke with Pietersen to gain insights on SORAI’s initiatives, the inspiration behind the new watch, and ways the public can help these remarkable creatures endure for many more millennia.
Kevin Pietersen wearing the SOBB Tourbillon SoraiSORAI has made progress in rhino conservation since its start; could you share a meaningful moment that inspired you to establish this organization?
Kevin Pietersen (KP): There wasn’t a specific moment, but rather a continuous journey of conservation and awareness efforts I’ve pursued since 2013. In 2018, I launched SORAI, thinking it was time to elevate our efforts in raising awareness and significant funds while engaging more individuals.
What notable achievements has SORAI accomplished since its creation?
KP: Regarding significant achievements, I prefer not to focus solely on SORAI or Hublot. The notable point is that rhino poaching appears to be decreasing, which is why we initiated this work and why we are gathered here, due to the considerable funds raised and their purposeful allocation.
We have been intentional about our spending, collaborating with trusted organizations to ensure funds are effectively utilized, which leads to tangible impacts. Randomly dispersing funds without direction can lead to stagnation, especially in a country like South Africa. We have concentrated on technology, sanctuary operations, and education for children, witnessing success, and the decline in rhino numbers is encouraging.
What sentiments or insights do you hope buyers gain from their watch purchase?
KP: A sense of togetherness, unity, and a focus on the people. This is fundamentally about the individuals living nearby who shoulder the immense responsibility of caring for this vital species.
How are the proceeds from this watch allocated within SORAI’s projects?
KP: The funds will be directed toward the community, education, and technology. The first edition benefitted “Care for Wild,” highlighting its importance as we can convert US dollars into Rands, as the former has substantial value in that context.
How can ordinary people aid in rhino conservation?
KP: We’ve established a SORAI Rangers Program to create a human barrier for protection. Everyone globally can feel that they can contribute in some way. We’ve introduced a subscription service that allows individuals to participate for as low as one pound a month, making them feel involved in the effort to safeguard these crucial species, regardless of their location.
