Balk Shipyard Relaunches 24m Ursus After Six-Meter Extension and Conversion into an Explorer Yacht

Balk Shipyard, a renowned Dutch builder, has officially relaunched the 30.5-metre Ursus, following an extensive, 18-month transformation into an impressive pocket explorer yacht. The vessel is currently gearing up for sea trials, and we can look forward to her delivery scheduled for February 2025.

In 2022, Ursus arrived at the Balk facilities in Urk, Netherlands, for a significant rebuild. This project was a collaborative effort with the talented team at Dutch studio Mulder Design. The ambitious plans included adding a new bow and stern, which increased her overall length by six metres. Previously, she was a sub-24-metre Acico build. Additionally, a longer superstructure was incorporated to enhance the volume of the main saloon, sundeck, and beach club.

She has been painted a metallic Lantau Gold to complement her new Range Rover styling.

Among the many upgrades, an extension was added to the upper deck, featuring an al fresco kitchen, new wing stations, crane foundations, and a refreshed beach club. The revamped layout now also includes an additional crew cabin, along with enhanced crew spaces, notably an en suite in the captain’s cabin.

“This was undoubtedly one of the most intricate rebuilds we’ve tackled,” shared Evan Kortmann, the CEO of Balk Shipyard. “Our dedicated team wholeheartedly embraced the challenge. We’ve successfully brought a visionary concept to fruition and are eager to fine-tune the yacht during the upcoming sea trials, ensuring she delivers optimal performance upon her delivery.”

Ursus was delivered in 2016 as Acico’s only DEY 24 model.

The original tender crane has been relocated to the newly extended sundeck, which now also houses the helm station, a barbecue, a Teppanyaki grill, and ample storage for two Jet Skis.

In addition to all these enhancements, Ursus has undergone advanced technical upgrades to ensure she performs at her best. Notably, new diesel-electric pods and Veth Azimut drives have been installed for optimal cruising capabilities.
