Project Thunderball. The name says it all. However, it is not associated with the latest 007 film. Instead, it is the code name for a project that is about to create a new chapter in the history of CRN. Announced in September 2023, the construction of the 70-meter yacht has entered a new phase today with the arrival of the hull at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona.
The standout feature of this new superyacht is its exterior lines, which reinterpret the explorer concept in a contemporary manner. Developed in collaboration with the Dutch naval architecture studio Vripack, these lines emphasize a superstructure profile that boasts a bold appearance and a strong expressive identity. ‘Our goal was to design a yacht that would ensure fuel-efficient sailing and a comfortable cruising experience.’
‘A goal we have accomplished thanks to our extensive experience in the sailing world,’ remarked Marnix Hoekstra, co-creative director of Vripack. Yes, sailing is another defining characteristic of this superyacht. It is a theme that frequently emerges, beginning with the owner’s enthusiasm for the sport, to the extent that the 70-meter yacht will be accompanied in its voyages by a smaller sailboat. Moreover, the owner has enlisted Nauta Design to oversee the design of both the interior and exterior. This choice is deliberate.
The Milanese studio has not only lent its name to several superyachts but also possesses significant expertise in the sailing industry, having made an impact on numerous winning projects, including the first My Song. For the interior, large glass surfaces will play a crucial role, serving not only to maintain a visual connection with the surrounding environment but also to provide natural light to the individual rooms.
Among the many milestones accompanying the debut of the new 70-meter yacht, it is noteworthy that this project marks the first collaboration between Nauta Design, Vripack, and CRN, alongside the Ferretti Group Superyachts Division Engineering team.
Joining this collaboration is Y.CO, the brokerage firm that facilitated the sale in August 2022. They play a critical role as the owner’s representative and project management team, continuing to assist the client throughout the construction phase, from technical verification and inspection to project management activities, on-site supervision, and coordination of external firms.
In terms of innovation, the new 70-meter yacht will feature a peak shaving system that will enhance energy efficiency and significantly reduce fuel consumption. Project Thunderball comprises five decks, has a Gross Tonnage of 1,100, and will accommodate 12 guests with a crew of 15. The launch is anticipated for 2026.
