29 November – 2 December 2024
On the second day of the 2024 World Sailing Youth Match Racing World Championship, the competition intensified on the Red Sea as teams from around the world vied for the title of world champions.
Organized by World Sailing in partnership with Sail Saudi and Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina, the qualifying rounds are nearing completion, with only two flights left.
Once again, nearly perfect conditions welcomed the twelve teams representing ten different countries this week. A gentle morning breeze of 6 – 8 knots from the North-West strengthened throughout the day, gradually shifting and increasing to 13 – 16 knots by the time racing wrapped up at sunset.
Australia’s Cole Tapper enjoyed another successful day on the water and remains in the lead, holding a one-point advantage over the defending World Champions, France. Tapper and his crew started the day strong, securing two victories in the light morning winds before taking a lengthy break ashore. However, their afternoon match against Ireland resulted in the Australians experiencing their first defeat of the Championship.
The significant advancement of Day 2 was Sweden’s Marius Westerlind, who moved up from 9th to 3rd place, demonstrating his years of experience at this level as he competes in his fifth world championship. Denmark also made a notable comeback from 11th to 7th and has qualified for the quarter-finals tomorrow.
Although there are two flights left to race, the quarter-finalists have been determined, with Australia, France, Sweden, New Zealand, USA, Denmark, and Ireland progressing.
