Expectations were high for the 2024 URUFARMA South American J/70 Championship, hosted by Yacht Club Punta del Este from November 18th to 24th, 2024.

Thirty J/70 teams from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay eagerly anticipated four days of racing in the scenic, world-renowned resort city of Punta del Este along the southeastern banks of the Rio de la Plata. Many teams viewed it as a “practice event” for those aiming for one of the six qualifying spots in the 2025 J/70 World Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina!

After an exciting eleven-race series, it became evident that the top three contenders were a trio from Brazil competing for the podium’s top slots. Remarkably, only two points separated these teams, all of whom have extensive experience on the international J/70 circuit in both the USA and Europe. The champion was decided by a tiebreaker, with each team finishing at 30 points net!

Winning the tiebreaker against their compatriots was Ralph Rosa’s MINDSET team, featuring Guilherme Hamelmann, Julio Carvalho, and Goncarlo Ribeiro, who secured four of the eleven races. The silver medal was awarded to globe-trotting Haroldo Soldberg’s VIKING team, including Geison Mendes, Mario Tinocco, and Gabriel Silva. Completing the podium was Sam Albrecht’s EL ENEMIGO crew, which comprised Gustavo Thiesen, Rodolfo Streibel, and Guilherme Roth.
