Three days of superb conditions and flawless organization by Club Náutico Olivos contributed to a memorable championship in Buenos Aires.

The 2024 Star South American Championship concluded brilliantly at Club Náutico Olivos, with Paul Cayard (USA) and Pedro Trouche (BRA) taking the title after three thrilling and competitive days of racing. The duo showcased their skills in the challenging conditions, finishing with a well-earned victory.

In second place were Lucas and Leandro Altolaguirre (ARG), who consistently recorded strong performances throughout the regatta. Fabian Mac Gowan and Nicolas Rosas (ARG) secured third place, completing an excellent podium for the event.

Consistent Conditions Ensure Close Racing

The final racing day featured the same steady winds as in previous days—16-20 knots from the same direction, coupled with a consistent current. These stable conditions set the stage for yet another round of intense, tactical racing that thrilled both competitors and spectators.

Once again, Club Náutico Olivos demonstrated its exceptional hospitality, providing world-class race management. The Argentinian Star Class continues to impress with its initiatives to grow the class and nurture young sailing talent. Their dedication and enthusiasm for the sport ensured another successful championship, reinforcing Argentina’s strong legacy in the Star fleet.

International Competition Highlights

The championship also showcased the international allure of the Star Class, with teams from Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Brazil, and the USA joining a robust Argentine contingent. Notable international competitors included Dani Fritz (GER), a sailor under 30, and Giovanni Coppo (ITA) with crew member Frithjof Kleen (GER). Coppo and Kleen demonstrated significant potential, frequently rounding the top mark among the leading three. However, they faced downwind challenges with their new boat, revealing areas for improvement as they prepare for upcoming events.

A Promising Future for the Star Class

The 2024 Star South American Championship highlighted not only the lasting appeal of this traditional racing class but also the efforts of the Argentinian fleet to increase participation and cultivate the next generation of sailors. With a blend of experienced champions like Paul Cayard and promising young talents, the event served as a testament to the strength and dynamism of the Star Class.

“We just completed the 2024 South American Championship here at the Yacht Club Olivos,” remarked Paul Cayard, President of the International Star Class and newly crowned 2024 Star South American Champion. “Buenos Aires is known for its winds, and you need considerable skill to outpace the Altolaguirre brothers, who are an excellent local team. We successfully did it. Pedro is a strong young guy, and I am incredibly thankful for his support as my crew. The Argentinian fleet is very robust, with over 30 boats and many young sailors, and they have Alberto Zanetti as a mentor who is helping to expand the fleet and construct new boats for them. Star sailing is vibrant and flourishing in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I’m thrilled to have witnessed this phenomenon, which should make the entire Class proud of the sailing quality here.”
