Have you ever thought about the excitement of being on the bow of a 100-footer when the wind picks up?
At the 2024 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Sardinia, the Mistral wreaked havoc on the competition, interrupting all but two days of racing. On the regatta’s final day, the Race Committee identified a brief opening in the Mistral’s grip and sent the fleet out early for the planned coastal race, with winds reaching over 20 knots.
Seng Huang Lee’s SHK Scallywag thrives in such conditions. We seized the chance to ask skipper David Witt if his crew could take our GoPro cameras for the race. Generously, the Scallywag team not only agreed, but they also swapped the cameras among the bow crew members. The outcome, as seen in this short compilation video, is stunning.
A heartfelt thanks to David Witt for allowing cameras on board and to crew member Nick Crones for coordinating the ‘videographers’ and the camera exchanges. Huge appreciation goes to the bow team, too—Ben Piggot, Nick Meyer, and Scott Salter—who played key roles in this thrilling spectacle.
If you previously didn’t have admiration for the incredible skill, agility, and determination of those at the front of a 100-footer, this video will change that!
