US Sailing, the national governing authority for sailing in the United States, is thrilled to announce the athlete selection criteria and requirements for the much-anticipated 2025 Team Race World Championship. Scheduled to take place at the New York Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island from May 28 to June 1, 2025, the event promises to be a highlight for the sailing community.
As outlined in the official Notice of Race and the selection documentation published by US Sailing, eligibility criteria and team composition play vital roles in representing the United States on the world stage. The selection procedure will ensure that only the most qualified and ready sailors are chosen to compete in this prestigious event.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for selection:
Athletes must fulfill all criteria specified in the Notice of Race for the event.
All team members must either be U.S. nationals or possess an approved waiver in accordance with international rules.
Athletes need to have an active World Sailing Sailor ID as well as a current membership with US Sailing.
Selection Procedure
The selection process will be managed by US Sailing’s International Selection Committee, which will provide two primary paths for entry:
2025 Baldwin Cup Results: The winning team of the Baldwin Cup at Newport Harbor Yacht Club will earn an automatic qualifying spot. In the event of cancellation, the top team from the 2024 Morgan Cup at New York Yacht Club will take the nomination.
Host Nation Invitation: A secondary U.S. team will be selected in collaboration with the New York Yacht Club, as described in the Notice of Race.
Confirmed teams must validate their participation within five days after the qualifying event’s conclusion. If any team declines their spot, the next highest-ranked team will be invited.
Event Highlights
The 2025 Team Racing World Championship will feature competitive two-boat racing in Sonar class boats on Narragansett Bay, highlighting a combination of strategy, skill, and cooperation. The event is expected to attract 12 exceptional teams from around the globe, all vying for the illustrious title of World Champion.
“US Sailing is thrilled to partner with Newport Harbor Yacht Club to host a qualifying event for next year’s Team Racing World Championship,” commented Clinton Hayes, Chair of the US Sailing Team Race Committee. “The Baldwin Cup is a premier keelboat racing event formatted for 2v2 matchups, so we are confident that the qualifying team(s) will continue USA’s impressive winning streak. We extend our gratitude to NHYC for allowing their annual event to serve as the U.S. qualifier and for inviting worthy teams that may not typically receive an invitation to the Baldwin.”
