Champion of the 2024 Triple Crown of Charity Sailing Trophy Revealed

The 2024 Triple Crown of Charity Sailing event witnessed remarkable engagement and fundraising from our community. The total number of skippers vying for the Triple Crown Trophy (backed by Weems & Plath) doubled this year.
Skippers and crews were required to participate in the Maryland Cures Cancer Regatta, the CRAB Cup, and the Hospice Cup, all while raising funds for the three charities involved.
The scoring for the Triple Crown of Charity Sailing Trophy is determined by the funds raised and the finishing positions of each boat in the three races. Each event is scored separately, and the totals are aggregated to identify the overall champion.
This year, the combined efforts of Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB), Maryland Cures Cancer Regatta, and Hospice Cup brought together an impressive array of 251 boats, with more than 1,000 participants, generating $572,000. The outstanding support for the three charities fostered a unique atmosphere at the awards presentation held at the CRAB Annapolis Adaptive Boating Center on Friday, November 1st.
The 2024 Triple Crown Champion is a long-time contender who has frequently ranked high in the scoring system. At times, it’s race results, and at others, fundraising efforts that have kept a skipper from clinching the trophy. This year, John Dodge and his team excelled in both areas, both on the water and in fundraising. In addition to honoring John Dodge and his crew, one team’s remarkable fundraising accomplishments emerged as exceptional. Roger Mason’s Tradecraft Team raised $33,925 for charity, nearly $10,000 beyond the closest competitor. While fundraising is not the only factor determining the winner, the introduction of the Rainmaker Award highlights the significance of these contributions. Hats off to Tradecraft and Roger Mason’s team for receiving this inaugural Rainmaker trophy from Weems & Plath.
Established in 2018, the Triple Crown of Charity Sailing Trophy aims to encourage increased participation in races and enhance fundraising efforts for all three charity races. Representatives from the three charities presented the trophy and accompanying awards to the winners. The Triple Crown Trophy is an impressive, repurposed award, formerly known as the Navigation Trophy of the Power Squadron of Baltimore. It is now permanently displayed at the CRAB Adaptive Boating Center. The names of Triple Crown of Charity Sailing Trophy winners are permanently inscribed on this beautiful trophy’s base.
