The New Zealand Match Racing Championship (NZMRC) is scheduled for November 14th to 17th at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, featuring 16 top competitors in what promises to be an exhilarating event.
Teams are only a week away from competing in the RNZYS’ fleet of Emirates Team New Zealand Elliott 7’s, with favorites already creating significant buzz. This year’s contest is anticipated to be memorable.
The impressive skill level is highlighted by three teams who recently participated in the prestigious Bermuda Gold Cup—one of the four premier events on the World Match Racing Tour. Among them is former Match Racing World Champion Nick Egnot-Johnson and his Knots Racing team, who secured third place in Bermuda and are currently ranked World No. 4. Egnot-Johnson aims to defend his 2023 NZMRC title, won against CYCA’s Cole Tapper. With Tapper also competing next week, we expect intense racing between these Trans-Tasman adversaries.
Also competing is World No. 6 Gavin Brady, a two-time NZMRC champion, whose participation alone elevates the competition. Additional competitors include former National Champion Reuben Corbett, a past coach of the Mastercard Youth Training Programme and a specialist in the Elliott 7 class, who is highly regarded on many prediction lists.
Looking toward the future of New Zealand Match Racing, we’re excited to see Youth World No. 1 Josh Hyde and his Performance Programme Waitemata Racing team compete against these elite sailors. Hyde and his crew are gaining momentum ahead of the Youth World Championship in December and will be ready to challenge both former and current champions. Jordan Stevenson, accompanied by a crew of Youth Training Programme alumni, is also expected to be a strong contender, likely to intensify the competition.
This year’s roster features not only experienced veterans but also emerging talents and international participants, each contributing skill and enthusiasm to the event. With a diverse lineup and high-quality teams, the 2024 New Zealand Match Racing Championships are set to provide unforgettable matchups.
