The Chesapeake Bay provided beautiful conditions on Thursday for the 48 teams taking part in the 2024 J/22 World Championship.
Three additional races were conducted by PRO Mark Foster and the Race Committee, bringing the total to six, now including a discard. Winds began at 16-18 knots and only dropped slightly during the day, which featured sunny skies, moderate temperatures, and choppy waters. Travis Odenbach’s Honeybadger held onto first place, achieving scores of 4, 12, and 1. By discarding the 12, the team from Rochester, NY, amassed 16 net points, one point ahead of Glenn Darden’s Baby Doll. Will Welles’ Cougar climbed to third overall with an impressive performance (2, 6, 2) for a total of 23 net points.
Teams left the dock on schedule from Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis, Maryland, for the fourth race, won by local Brad Julian’s Yard Sail, trailed by Welles and Darden. In the subsequent race, Darden seized the lead, with Chase Quinn’s Osprey and Mike Gemperline’s Defiance joining the competition. Odenbach secured his place for Thursday with a bullet to finish the day, while Welles remained strong as the runner-up and Mike Farrington’s AdJusted finished third.
Racing will carry on through Saturday. Full event details can be found here.
