Forty-eight teams representing 15 states and four countries competed on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay for the first day of the J/22 World Championship in Annapolis, Maryland.

Participants were greeted by summer-like conditions with blue skies, temperatures in the 70s, and winds at 8-10 knots over a light chop. The Race Committee successfully conducted three races, with a total of up to 11 races planned. Travis Odenbach’s Honeybadger achieved all top five finishes (5,4,2), securing the early lead with 11 points. The top three teams are closely contested, with Chris Doyle’s The Jug 4 1 in second and Glenn Darden’s Baby Doll in third, just two points apart.

Chris Doyle’s The Jug 4 1 started the World Championship with the first of two consecutive first-place finishes in race one. Following him were James Freedman’s Miss Conduct and Kurt Taken-Holtze’s Turn Down 4 What in the initial race. Will Welles’ Cougar and Brad Julian’s Yard Sail completed the top group in race two. Local sailor Jeff Todd’s Hot Toddy won the last race of the day, followed by Odenbach’s Honeybadger and Darden’s Baby Doll.

Eastport Yacht Club facilitated two days of seamless registration and inspection, including a practice race on Tuesday. Racing will continue until Saturday.
