The race began punctually.
There was a start line confrontation as Emirates Team New Zealand, sailing on starboard tack, bore away (turned away from the wind direction). The British team on port (the give-way boat) performed a similar maneuver, resulting in both boats being on a potential collision course. The foil arms of both vessels came alarmingly close together, an incident that could have been disastrous if their wing foils had connected.
Both teams filed protests. INEOS Britannia, presumably feeling that Emirates Team New Zealand was “hunting” the Brits, maintained that they were trying to yield but felt pursued by the Kiwis.
Upon reviewing the footage, Umpires noted that there was overlap between the virtual boats and that a penalty had to be imposed on the boat failing to keep clear—typically affecting the give-way boat.
The New Zealanders commenced with a significant advantage, starting 75 meters ahead of the Brits due to the penalty, and despite a strong effort from INEOS Britannia, they found it impossible to overturn this situation. Once again, for the 13th straight race, the leading boat at Mark 1 clinched victory.
Post-race, an exchange occurred between INEOS Britannia Skipper Ben Ainslie and lead commentator Steven McIvor after Ainslie reacted defensively to a post-race inquiry. Unbeknownst to him, his microphone was still on, leading Ainslie to insult McIvor as he exited the starboard helmsman’s cockpit at the interview’s end.
The wind failed to consistently meet the necessary minimum strength and started to diminish as predicted. Following several delays in starting times, racing was ultimately called off for the day.
