After an intense final day featuring spectacular conditions in the Bay of Roses in L’Escala, Spain, the champions of the 2024 RS21 World Championship have been announced.
The Italian team, Stenghele, skippered by Pietro Negri and joined by crew members Niccolo Bianchi, Giovanni Meloni, and Camilla Cordero di Montezemolo, clinches the gold medal with a total of 59 points following 9 races. Although they were tied for third with 63 points, the second position was awarded to Fremito D’Arja, whose team included Dario Levi, Jas Farneti, Stefano Cherin, and Fausto Surini.
The defending World Championship squad, Caipirinha, consisting of Martin Reintjes, Francesco Rubagotti, Daniele Cassinari, and Giulio Desiderato, secured the last spot on the all-Italian podium, showcasing the nationality’s strength in the competition.
In the Corinthian division, the Lithuanian team Storm, with Raimondas Siugzdinis, Klaudio Kliucinskas, Egle Kivisikk, and Andrius Ramonaitis, took home the gold. Silver was earned by ITA 238, featuring Riccardo Benvenuto, Riccardo Vincenzi, Duccio Abolaffio, and Diego Larcher. Bronze was claimed by the Italian crew of Nox Oceani 285, led by Andrea Nocella, sailing with crew members Andrea de Matteis, Riccardo Serra, Matteo Paulon, Tito Morbiducci, and Giorgio Nocella.
Nox Oceani 285 achieved double honors by also winning the Under 23 category. Silver in that category went to the Italian Nordés team, crewed by Camilla Michelini, Alessandro Bossi, Sara Rolle, Giorgia Caropreso, Tommaso Comelli, and Federico Bossi. Another Italian team, Nox Oceani 231, owned by Andrea Nocella and crewed by Francesco Columbano, Luca De Matteis, Salvatore Garippa, Claudio Sechi, and Riccardo-Hai Gessa, finished third.
The week at Club Nàutic L’Escala was filled with excitement. The prize-giving ceremony took place in Regatta Village on Saturday, September 28th. Remarks were made by Narcís Carreras, president of the Club Nàutic L’Escala, Michiel Geerling, Commercial Director of RS Sailing, Josep Maria Isern, president of the Catalan Sailing Federation, and Josep Bofill, the Mayor of L’Escala.
As the class flag was lowered, the RS21 World Championship concluded, having hosted 164 RS21 sailors from 10 countries across two continents. The conditions varied significantly, providing a challenge. Participants experienced the signature thermal winds of L’Escala on the first day, with increasing wind speeds and gusts from westerly and northerly directions in the subsequent days.
The regatta showcased fierce competition, with several shifts at the top of the leaderboard during the week, resulting in narrowly contested point differentials. This clearly reflected the thrilling nature of one-design racing and the high competitive standards within the class.
