Exciting, enjoyable, and nimble! The RS CAT12 introduces buoyancy and effortless handling to the catamaran sailing community. This new design from RS Sailing arrives as the lively younger counterpart to the RS CAT16 and RS CAT14, catering to training centers, schools, rental services, and families who seek an uncomplicated entry into CAT sailing.
“We are thrilled to launch the RS CAT12 in the RS Sailing lineup,” states RS Marine Group Co-CEO Jon Partridge. “In recent years, our catamaran sales have steadily increased, and we believe the new RS CAT12 will further enhance that growth.”
So, what’s different? This compact speedster retains many of the signature features of its predecessors while incorporating innovative elements, all while simplifying the design – enabling beginners to embark on their sailing journey with assurance.
The streamlined layout features a furling jib, reefable mainsail, and a mast head float to prioritize safety during the learning process. Front grab handles and kick-up rudders make launching and returning to the shore as straightforward as possible, and the entire boat can be lifted using the RS-patented hull gully.
Strong and resilient, the hull is crafted from rotomolded PE1, ensuring durability. To enhance versatility, bow fenders protect against unintended bumps and scrapes. “These are not standard bow fenders,” RS Marine Group Co-CEO Alex Newton Southon clarifies. “The unique design allows for detachable and replaceable fenders that snap into the hull’s overall shape – a true innovation of the RS CAT12.”
Regarding comfort, the self-draining design includes concave seating on the hull and trampoline seating for up to three crew members. “The RS CAT12 was crafted with joy and exploration in mind,” remarks RS Marine Group Commercial Director, Michiel Geerling. “While it’s perfect for introductory training and short sessions, it’s also designed for kids to play, jump in, swim, and discover!”
Optional features comprise a single trapeze, offering novices a fantastic way to gain comfort on the wire and enhance performance in an enjoyable manner.
Nico Honor, Founder of RS Sailing France, tested the RS CAT12 during its launch at Port de Morgat, France, last week. “It was an excellent first sailing experience! The RS CAT12 is a delightful catamaran to handle. The hull displays good buoyancy, the fittings and tuning feel optimal, and the setup is incredibly straightforward. Steering is smooth and responsive, making it both high-performing and forgiving for newcomers.”
Liam Willis, Technical Assistant at RS Marine Group, participated in the UK sea trials. “It’s undeniably lively, feather-light, and enjoyable! Assembly was quick, and it’s easy to load onto a roof rack for a trip to the coast. Almost maintenance-free, I see this becoming a favorite among training centers.”
Perfect for beginners or families eager for aquatic adventures, the RS CAT12 rounds out the versatile RS CAT trilogy of all-performance catamarans, adding excitement to entry-level sailing. Interested in seeing it in action? The RS CAT12 will be showcased at the La Rochelle Boat Show, from Tuesday 1st October to Sunday 6th October at Grand Pavois Beach, France.
