Oyster Perpetual Submariner – the watch that explored the depths

The iconic dive watch that is known worldwide finally takes center stage in its own narrative, crafted by distinguished historian, storyteller, and watch expert Nick Foulkes. Believe it or not, Oyster Perpetual Submariner – the watch that explored the depths is the inaugural authorized book-length examination of the genuine history behind the world’s first wristwatch that is water-resistant to 100 meters (or as Rolex consistently claims, waterproof to that depth).

Released as a bilingual edition (in English and French) spanning 252 pages, this book results from a collaboration between Rolex and the renowned design magazine Wallpaper*. In its press announcement supporting this publication, which was released on September 16, Rolex states that this is merely the first in a line of future releases. This premiere issue, which we have yet to peruse, promises much more than a monotonous recounting of historical facts and technical details. Foulkes infuses excitement, including stories of the “pioneers who tested the prototypes.”

“As a historian with a lifelong passion for watches, I was thrilled and honored to receive exceptional access to the Rolex archives and feel privileged to be invited to document the first authorized narratives of timepieces that have influenced history,” remarked Foulkes. “I am immensely thankful to Rolex for trusting me to tell its story. It is a captivating narrative, to which I have endeavored to give due credit.” The book also features Rolex Testimonees, emphasizing their contributions through the framework of Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative, which supports organizations and individuals focused on environmental exploration and conservation.
