Our video library is completely searchable and receives weekly updates with the newest sailing videos. Here, we focus on early Cadet class racing. Jack Holt created the hull in 1947; however, we could find footage starting only from the late 1950s.
The oldest footage available is from a Fairey Marine promotional film. If you wish to skip ahead, the Cadet can be seen at 1m29s, but you might want to watch the entire film to spot the Firefly, Finn, 505, Albacore, and others that didn’t survive into the next decade.
From the late fifties, Cadet Week at Burnham in 1959 is notable for having 168 entries! Sail numbers had reached the 2000s. Personal floatation devices weren’t the best at the time, but it was excellent to see their enforcement.
Next, we present two videos from the sixties. The first may have its location incorrectly labeled, so please reach out if you have more accurate information! The racing at Northampton showcases Cadet class dinghies for just 4 minutes, followed by some barge sailing footage.
Another silent montage is available, featuring Cadet class at Parkstone YC in 1967, followed by some less engaging harbor scenes (after 1m58s). Regrettably, the quality is somewhat poor, though sail numbers in the 3000s are still visible.
Moving on to the seventies! The 1974 World Championships in Portugal highlight the participation of Australian teams. The cheerful music will instantly immerse you in a vintage atmosphere. This nearly 19-minute video delves into the racing details.
Our last video before the digital transition features the UK Nationals at Burnham, held in 1988. Adam May skillfully converted this from a VHS tape, ensuring high quality. The event attracted 140 boats to Essex, with Charlotte Neill and Ryan Lee emerging as the champions.
What about earlier footage? Surely there must be more from the fifties! Do you know of any other Cadet videos? We would be thrilled to share these with sailors globally. You can submit video links for quick review.
