It is with profound sorrow that Sail Canada informs the Canadian sailing community of the death of Past President G. Sicotte Hamilton in Collingwood, ON, on September 17, 2024, at the age of 91.

G. Sicotte Hamilton was raised in Montreal, where he became a member of the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club to engage in competitive sailing.

In 1959, he participated in the World Championships in the Netherlands, where he and his team achieved a gold medal for Canada. He subsequently represented Canada as part of a coaching staff at the Pan American Games.

During the 1970s, he served as President of both the Ontario Sailing Association and the Canadian Yachting Association (Sail Canada).

Throughout his life, he also contributed to creating a youth sailing program at the Couchiching Yacht Club, volunteered at numerous regattas, and enjoyed sailing his boat, the Mount Royal II, in Georgian Bay. He was also a founding member and participant of the Morningside Coffee Crew.

“On behalf of the Sail Canada community, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of G. Sicotte Hamilton,” stated Kate MacLennan, Chair of Sail Canada’s Board of Directors. “Sailing was a true passion for G. Sicotte Hamilton. Through his diverse experiences, he embodied the ‘Sail for All, Sail for Life, and Sail to Win’ principles of our sport.”
