The International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA) is excited to announce that Trieste, Italy, has been chosen as the host city for the 2025 Melges 24 World Championship.
As a well-known sailing epicenter, Trieste has served as a significant venue for Melges 24 events over the years, organizing many local regattas and legs of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series. From September 20-27, 2025, the best Melges 24 sailors globally will converge in Trieste, located at the Adriatic Sea’s northern end, to vie for the illustrious World Championship title.
Laura Grondin, Chair of the IM24CA, expressed her enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to announce Trieste as the host for the 2025 Melges 24 Worlds. We considered two excellent options: Trieste, Italy, and Portoroz, Slovenia. I want to thank Yacht Club Marina Portoroz and Yacht Club Adriaco for their strong proposals. Congratulations to the Italian Melges 24 Class and Yacht Club Adriaco for winning the bid! We look forward to welcoming sailors from all over the world to Italy for what promises to be an extraordinary event.”
Trieste, on Italy’s northeastern shore, boasts a rich maritime tradition and is famous for the Barcolana regatta, one of the largest and most prestigious sailing competitions worldwide. With its vibrant sailing environment and tradition of high-caliber racing, Trieste has naturally become a meeting point for Melges 24 teams, drawing them for local and regional races. Clubs such as the Società Triestina Sport del Mare and Yacht Club Adriaco have long hosted these competitions, with local sailors actively participating in the Melges 24 class.
Marcello Caldonazzo Arvedi, President of the Melges 24 Italian Class, stated: “We are excited and thankful for the confidence shown in us to host the 2025 Melges 24 World Championship in Trieste, with Yacht Club Adriaco leading the charge. The YCA is an amazing, historical venue with a proven history of organizing top-notch regattas, including numerous European Sailing Series events. We believe that the 2025 Worlds will be a highlight for the class, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming a strong fleet to this beautiful city, which is home to most of our Italian fleet, thanks to many local clubs adopting the Melges 24 as their fleet boat.”
“We invite all Melges 24 sailors to experience Trieste, one of Italy’s hidden treasures.”
Nicolò de Manzini, President of Yacht Club Adriaco, added: “It is an honor for both Yacht Club Adriaco and the city of Trieste to host the Melges 24 World Championship in 2025. We are committed to ensuring a world-class event for all competitors. The Melges 24 class is iconic in one-design sailing, and we’ve proudly hosted numerous regattas for the class in the past. We are excited to elevate this experience with the World Championship and are confident Trieste will shine on the global stage.”
This will mark the first time the Melges 24 World Championship is held in the Adriatic Sea, a significant achievement for the class. Trieste, known for its favourable wind conditions, especially the Bora, has historically been a training ground for competitive sailors, making it an ideal place for this championship. Its location at the top of the Adriatic also provides logistical ease for teams from Europe and beyond.
Tentative dates for the pre-Worlds in Trieste are September 5-7, 2025, allowing sailors to get accustomed to the waters before the main event.
