Circolo Vela Torbole, in partnership with the J/70 Italian Class, has been chosen by the International J/70 Class Association to host the first-ever J/70 Mixed Plus World Championship.

This championship will take place in Torbole on Lake Garda from June 26-29, 2025, celebrating the fastest growing one-design Class globally, with nearly 2,000 boats manufactured in the last ten years.

To grasp the concept of a Mixed Plus team, one can refer to Section I.11 of the J/70 Class Rules, which states that “…a crew shall consist of four or more people and include no more than two males over 18 years old.” Essentially, the only limitation is that a team may not have more than two adult males. This format allows for a wide variety of team combinations. The rule was implemented to encourage increased female participation in sailing, which remains a priority for the J/70 International Class. Furthermore, a key objective of this rule is to create more chances for families and young sailors to engage in J/70 events.

It is the adaptability of the rule, permitting various team combinations, that has piqued the interest of many boat owners. They are starting to explore different crew arrangements in hopes of being competitive in this highly anticipated event.

“We were thrilled to promptly accept the J/70 International Class’s invitation to organize this inaugural international event, just as we did with the J/70 Corinthian World Championship, which has now become an essential part of the International Class. I believe that the Mixed Plus format, focusing on family-oriented crews and increased female representation, could significantly enhance the success of what is already regarded as the premier one-design Class,” stated Federico Siragna, President of the J/70 Italian Class.

“The new Mixed Plus World Championship aims to introduce another layer of J/70 sailing by providing our community with an exciting opportunity for international competition and another wonderful sailing experience,” remarked Vittorio Di Mauro, President of the J/70 International Class. “As a genuinely global one-design keelboat Class, we strive to offer sailing opportunities across all demographics, budgets, and skill levels. From regular weekend club racing to an extraordinary three World Championships each year across alternating continents, where you can meet and compete alongside some of the world’s best keelboat sailors…only the J/70 can make this happen.”
