Alinghi Red Bull Racing faced pressure to perform and, in challenging light winds, navigated the course effectively while remaining on their foils to defeat Ineos Britannia. With this point secured, the Swiss team has the momentum needed for the continuation of the Semi-Finals.
Significant stakes were involved for Alinghi Red Bull Racing on Semi-Final Day 3, and they persevered to achieve a decisive victory over Ineos Britannia. In conditions that hindered the British team’s ability to foil, the Swiss crew seized their opportunity, sailing expertly to build a considerable lead. During the final portion of the race, the Swiss boat transitioned into displacement mode, competing against the clock rather than the British team as they raced within a 45-minute limit. As they made their painstaking approach to the finish line, the Swiss boat claimed their first point of the Semi-Finals. The next match was called off as the wind limit was not met, with upcoming races slated for Wednesday, September 18th.
Arnaud Psarofaghis, Skipper: “Naturally, we want to finish at 45 knots. Still, 8 knots is acceptable too if it results in a win, so we’re pleased with this one.”
Nico Stahlberg, Cyclor: “In that race, we were racing against time. We were aware of the time constraints. By the end, we abandoned trying to foil. Our sole focus was reaching the finish line as quickly as possible, and there was this mix of urgency and patience because our options were limited. It felt incredibly hot in the cockpit, like a sauna. I was drenched in sweat, but in the end, it proved worthwhile, and we were ecstatic. Crossing the finish line, whether foiling or not, a point is a point, and this was crucial for us.”
Pietro Sibello, Head Coach: “In prepping the team, we emphasized keeping it straightforward and relying on their skills. Maintaining momentum until the finish is essential; placing excessive pressure on oneself can lead to mistakes. We noticed weaknesses in the British team’s performance in these light winds today. Recognizing this as our chance, we took full advantage and it paid off.”
