Dan Kleitz, the general manager and longtime public figure of Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats, is still contemplating a specific model name for the canopied version of the Bristol, R.I., company’s 37-foot catamaran. “Perhaps SCC 37, or something different, or maybe just ‘canopied’ SC 37,” he shared. “There’s no rush right now. We have the time.”
The first canopied Outerlimits SC 37 catamaran is set to begin rigging next week.
Kleitz and his Outerlimits team have some time, but not much. Rigging for the inaugural canopied 37-footer, equipped with twin Mercury Racing 500R outboard engines, is scheduled for next week. Ryan Schwarzen from Missouri’s Kutting Edge Interiors designed its interior. Powerboat painter Stephen Miles from Kentucky has just started creating the vinyl graphics for the cat, which will feature a painted yellow background.
The graphics will be made and applied by a Michigan company, the home state of the SC 37’s owner. This client is a repeat customer of Outerlimits with a canopied V-bottom boat.
The catamaran was built from the ground up using what Kleitz describes as a “custom engineered” carbon-fiber-and-epoxy lamination process. While he stressed that the cat is designed as a “pleasure boat” not intended for racing, it does feature a roll-bar and a hull-bottom escape hatch.
“As is well-known, we emphasize the quality and strength of our boats,” Kleitz stated. “Whether canopied or open-cockpit, we are confident in their durability.”
Despite the trend towards eight-seat cockpits in the sport cat market, the canopied model, like its open-cockpit predecessor, features six seats.
The yellow 37-footer is made from carbon fiber and epoxy.
“The interiors are the same,” Kleitz noted. “Having six seats instead of eight allows for more space. The seats are comfortable, there’s ample legroom and plenty of open areas. It’s a very spacious interior.”
“We remain the only company offering both canopied and open-cockpit catamarans along with V-bottom sportboats, and we eagerly anticipate showcasing the first one so everyone can see it,” he added. “It will be on the water by the end of the year.”
If a model name for the canopied SC 37 catamaran is in the works, it may need to be decided sooner than Kleitz and his team expect.
“Maybe SCC 37,” Kleitz pondered aloud, then chuckled. “Oh wait, no, SCC is the name of a college football conference already. That’s fine. If we need a name, we’ll sort it out.”
