The multinational technology company, established in 2018 and previously known as OSCAR, has rebranded itself as SEA.AI. This rebranding follows the successful development of their products, which aims to consolidate everything under one umbrella brand.

Managing Partner Christoph Ballin states, “SEA.AI embodies our leading role in equipping crews with advanced systems powered by artificial intelligence. It succinctly describes what we do in the fewest possible words – just 5 letters.”

As ocean traffic increases and the risk of collisions rises, the ability to identify other vessels and objects on a path has never been more crucial. SEA.AI is at the forefront of marine vision and the advancement of autonomous technology. They utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) in yacht navigation to enhance safety.

Co-founder Raphael Biancale developed the OSCAR concept while navigating a challenging ocean passage with limited visibility. Biancale aimed to enhance safety and convenience for fellow sailors. SEA.AI now offers a range of products that combine optical and thermal sensors with AI technology. Their cutting-edge products are expertly crafted to detect objects that cannot be identified using traditional methods like Radar and AIS, such as unlit craft, floating obstacles, and even individuals.

During the last Transat Jacques Vabre, an instance of this detection capability was demonstrated. The skipper of the IMOCA Initiatives Coeur, Samantha Davies, commented, “OSCAR alerted me to several small boats that I had difficulty seeing under the spinnaker, hidden by the waves, one of which was directly in our path. I took over the helm just in time to avert the collision. We altered our course, but the worst was avoided.”

This versatility is applicable across all sectors of the marine industry, from superyachts and government vessels to high-performance racing yachts and commercial ships.

OSCAR technology merges onboard thermal cameras with advanced processing to deliver real-time day and night vision. This data is processed using AI technology and can be integrated with navigation systems on smartphones, tablets, or onboard computers. The augmented reality video stream coupled with map view and an intelligent alarm system based on threat levels assists watchkeepers onboard. Key functionalities include collision avoidance, perimeter surveillance, object tracking, and manual control, with the system continually evolving through regular over-the-air updates.

SEA.AI is poised for an exciting future, with a rapid expansion of the OSCAR technology product portfolio expected in the upcoming years.
