A 30-year-old woman has tragically died after a shark bitten off her leg near a popular vacation destination. The terrifying incident occurred while she was aboard a catamaran located in international waters, approximately 278 miles southwest of Gran Canaria’s airport. The woman, who remains unidentified but is from Germany, succumbed to her injuries in a Spanish Air Force helicopter during her evacuation to a Gran Canaria hospital. She boarded the helicopter at 8 PM but passed away at 11 PM yesterday following cardiac arrest inside the aircraft. The shark attack took place around 4 PM on the same day, suggesting she died approximately seven hours later. The catamaran sent out a Mayday call at 3:55 PM, and Spanish coastguards promptly notified other vessels in proximity regarding the emergency situation.
Another vessel reached the catamaran to provide medical assistance to the victim. Local sources indicate that Moroccan authorities declined to transfer the wounded woman to Rabat for treatment. The catamaran, identified as the British-flagged Dalliance Chichester, departed from the Canaries on September 14 and measures 17 meters in length and 8 meters in width. The UK coastguards have been informed of the incident due to the catamaran’s origin. As of this evening, the specifics surrounding the shark attack remain unclear, and such attacks are uncommon in this area, with no prior documented incidents.
