Challenging Gravity: The Aluminium Legacy of RIMOWA

Exploring the craftsmanship behind the RIMOWA Original bag.

The story of duralumin begins in the early 1900s, when German metallurgist Alfred Wilm discovered this remarkable aluminium alloy. Little did anyone know that this innovation would revolutionize aviation and become synonymous with a distinguished German brand for decades.

While many brands boast about their iconic colors, unique designs, or distinctive motifs, few can lay claim to a material quite like RIMOWA does.

Legend has it that a devastating fire in the 1930s nearly obliterated a RIMOWA factory, leaving only the aluminium intact. This incident prompted Richard Morszeck, the second-generation owner, to pivot towards aluminium instead of their traditional wooden designs. Interestingly, Morszeck had dabbled with aluminium back in the 1920s when he crafted the brand’s very first aluminium trunk.

In branding, it’s crucial to continuously innovate to keep an association alive. Just because a brand is known for a particular aspect (and let’s face it, RIMOWA encompasses much more than just aluminium) doesn’t mean it should stagnate.

Similar to the evolution of air travel, RIMOWA’s aluminium luggage has transformed over the years. Initially, their aluminium cases resembled bulky trunks without wheels (a nightmare, right?). However, 1972 marked a turning point when RIMOWA introduced its first wheeled suitcase. Subsequently, the brand streamlined its aluminium offerings into three distinct collections: the ultra-sleek Original, the Classic adorned with leather handles, and the innovative Hybrid, which combines polycarbonate with chic aluminium accents.

In 1950, RIMOWA introduced its signature grooves, inspired by the all-metal (yes, duralumin!) Junkers F 13 plane, a pivotal aircraft of its time. These grooves run in parallel along the length of each piece, becoming a hallmark of the brand’s design philosophy. While this distinctive grooved aesthetic remains a signature feature of many RIMOWA products, the brand has also ventured into diverse decorative treatments for aluminium. A noteworthy example is the limited-edition Hammerschlag collection, inspired by a Hand-Carry Case from 1966, featuring a unique “hammer hit” exterior. This textured surface not only catches the light beautifully but also cleverly conceals any signs of wear.

Through the years, RIMOWA has solidified its status in luxury not only through its striking visuals but also through an unwavering commitment to innovation. It has transformed from being just a luggage brand to a comprehensive luxury mobility brand designed for all forms of movement. The use of aluminium has expanded beyond safeguarding travel essentials to include a variety of items that hold personal significance. RIMOWA’s aluminium has been expertly crafted into various functional items, ranging from vanity cases to an attaché designed solely for mahjong and even a specially crafted watch case for three elegant timepieces.

RIMOWA has also embraced the more practical, everyday uses of aluminium by designing a range of bags and accessories. Notably, the Personal collection features crossbody bags and sling clutches that mirror the beloved mini versions of RIMOWA suitcases, but with cleverly integrated locking mechanisms for enhanced usability. The brand has even crafted a sleek aluminium cardholder that opens with a stylish swivel and offers protection against RFID and NFC technologies.

And rest assured, RIMOWA is far from done innovating with aluminium. In the last quarter of 2024, the brand unveiled two new aluminium designs. The Original bag marks the brand’s first unisex, multi-carry handbag, designed to resemble a compact suitcase that can be carried as a top-handle, shoulder bag, or crossbody. Additionally, the limited-edition Original Cabin Optical gives a captivating twist to the classic aluminium suitcase with an eye-catching interpretation of the grooved design.

So, where does RIMOWA go from here? Having already secured its legacy in aluminium, the possibilities are endless. Perhaps, much like its inspirations soaring through the skies, the brand’s journey will continue to reach new heights.
