Louis Burton, one of the expected leaders, reported to race control that he had discovered deck cracks on his foiling IMOCA Bureau Vallée.
“On Saturday, November 16 at 2200hrs UTC, while sailing in the top group on the western route, Louis Burton told his shore team and Vendée Globe race management that he had just heard a very concerning sound: a ‘big crack’ aboard the IMOCA Bureau Vallée,” stated Vendée Globe Race Control in a press release.
“After taking all necessary precautions and performing a series of inspections, he found cracks on the deck of the boat (at the Gennaker spreader area), which could jeopardize the structural integrity of the vessel.
“Burton continues to investigate. The skipper of the IMOCA Bureau Vallée remains actively in the race.”
The western group is advancing well in strong winds, and we examine the VMG figures and their significance.
