NYYC American Magic Youth delivered an impressive performance in today’s UniCredit Youth America’s Cup final, where they went head-to-head against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in a winner-takes-all contest.
Despite the Italian team sailing an outstanding race with few mistakes, the American crew put up a strong fight in a fiercely contested match.
The race commenced with an early disadvantage for American Magic, as they entered the starting area prematurely, leading to a “get behind” penalty. This required the team to pause and strategize, giving Luna Rossa a slight early edge. Nonetheless, under Harry Melges’ guidance, along with Kyle Navin, Severin Gramm, and Finn Rowe, American Magic swiftly regrouped and mounted a strong challenge.
Both teams faced challenging conditions, navigating through a south-westerly wind of 14-18 knots. Despite the initial penalty, American Magic showcased excellent boat handling and tactical race decisions, pressing Luna Rossa at every turn. While the Italians maintained their lead, the Americans relentlessly kept the pressure on throughout the race.
In the final legs, Luna Rossa’s impeccable execution preserved their lead, but American Magic’s grit and composure were evident as they worked to narrow the gap. Although they crossed the finish line 36 seconds behind the Italians, their determination and resilience in overcoming stiff competition to reach the final were notable achievements.
Reflecting on the race, helm Harry Melges expressed admiration for both his teammates and their competitors:
“Firstly, a big congratulations to Luna Rossa for a fantastic race. They performed flawlessly, and it was a privilege to race against them. I couldn’t be prouder of our American Magic team—we fought hard, maintained focus, and gave our all on the water. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without tremendous support from Hap Fauth, Doug DeVos, the New York Yacht Club, and the entire American Magic organization. We are grateful and proud to represent them.”
Competing in the UniCredit Youth America’s Cup final is a significant milestone for this young crew. Their ability to stay competitive even after an early penalty highlights their skill and determination.
The outlook is promising for these sailors, and everyone at New York Yacht Club American Magic is immensely proud.
