The initial races of the RS21 World Championship 2024 took place in the Bay of Roses on Wednesday, September 25th. The fleet completed three races on the opening day under the excellent conditions L’Escala is famous for.

The southerly wind, blowing at 12 to 18 knots with a 160º direction that shifted to 185º, provided thrilling Corinthian racing in the one-design fleet.

At the conclusion of Day 1, Italy leads the fleet with Dario Levi’s ITA 288 Fremito de Arja in first place, just two points ahead of second position, Edoardo Lupi’s ITA 244 Torpyone, which holds 18 points. The third position is occupied by defending champions, ITA 296 Caipirinha helmed by Martin Reintjes.

In the Corinthian category, Riccardo Benvenuto’s ITA 238 is leading with 35 points, followed by the Polish team POL 278 Euro Shipping, skippered by Igor Tarasiuk, and Raimondas Šiugždinis’ Lithuanian LTU 308 Storm, both tied for second place with 44 points.

Italy also leads in the Under 23 category with two boats owned by Andrea Nocella: ITA 285 Nox Oceani 285, helmed by Andrea de Matteis, and ITA 231 Nox Oceani 231 skippered by Francesco Columbano. Third place belongs to Camilla Michellini’s ITA 234 with Alessandro Bossi at the helm.

On the social front, the RS21 World Championship began the day with weather insights for the regatta from Enric Agud, the meteorologist of the Catalan Sailing Federation and presenter of El Temps on Catalan television. In the evening, a pasta party welcomed sailors, fostering plenty of social interaction at Regatta Village in Club Nàutic L’Escala atop the iconic RS Sailing magenta carpet.
