Twenty-six boats enjoyed 8-17 knot winds as they commenced the J/105 North American Championship in Cleveland, OH. Local sailor Chip Schaffner’s Fall Line surged to an early lead with two wins and a 7 for a total of 9 points. The escalating winds on Lake Erie posed challenges for the teams at the event organized by Edgewater Yacht Club.

The 2021 NAC Champion Tim Russell’s Ne*Ne is just one point behind in second place after scoring 7,2,1. Multiple NAC champions Terry McLaughlin & Rod Wilmer’s Mandate are currently in third position.

Schaffner’s Fall Line initiated the Championship with their first victory on Thursday, followed closely by McLaughlin/Wilmer’s Mandate and David Butcher’s Highlander. In the second race, Ne*Ne came in after Fall Line, with Thomas Cliffel’s Rapscallion next. Ne*Ne secured the day’s last win, outpacing McLaughlin & Wilmer’s Mandate and Bill Zartler’s Deja Voodoo.

Racing is set to continue through Sunday. Photos can be accessed here, and complete results are available here.
