The Melges 15 Class successfully kicked off the 2024-25 Winter Series at the Melges Watersports Center in Merritt Island, Florida, launching a new event in November the weekend before Thanksgiving. This inaugural event attracted 66 teams from throughout the country, marking a remarkable start to the season.

Before the weekend’s regatta, Class Coach Paris Henken led an intensive two-day racing clinic, which drew more than 20 teams for practical drills in winds reaching 25 knots, followed by onshore debriefs. Sailors received detailed critiques to enhance their skills through footage captured by drones and coach boats.

“The coaching was exceptional. We started from scratch and came away knowing exactly what we can improve,” remarked Jeff Daigle (Annapolis, MD). “Though we have much work ahead, we’re leaving the water with smiles and eager to return.”

The Melges 15 fleet welcomed its new location at the Melges Watersports Center, located along the Banana River. This spacious, sheltered venue provides year-round opportunities for racing, clinics, and leisure activities. With direct beach access, launching, and racing just offshore, the site has been praised for its convenience and outstanding sailing conditions.

“Nothing compares to being able to step right on and start sailing,” David O’Connor (San Diego, CA) stated. O’Connor chartered a Melges 15 with his wife, Eve, achieving the title for top couple while participating in the clinic and enjoying nearby attractions like the Kennedy Space Center.

The weekend included four races on Saturday, followed by a celebratory day on Sunday. Cole Schweda and Brent Penwarden emerged victorious, earning top youth (under 21) with 17 points, closely followed by top female competitors Emily Haig and Zoe Fisher with 19 points, while top couple Erik and Aly Storck completed the podium with 30 points.

Following a strong kickoff to the Winter Series, the next event is set for January 4. To stay informed on results, photos, and videos, visit melges15.com. For details about the venue, go to melgeswatersports.com.
